ESPN has said that the Coastal Bend is the "hot bed" for high school baseball in America and they are 100% right. With top draft pics in the 2012 MLB draft of Courtney Hawkins and Wyatt Matheson, our area has sprinted past all other places. The Corpus Christi area has many teams that are state ranked; Callalen, Carroll, Sinton, Robstown, Moody & Port Aransas. Having this many top teams in the state is a testiment to how big baseball is in South Texas. Growing up as a kid in Rockport, playing Little League Baseball are some of my favorite memories in life. I see guys like Courtney, Wyatt, Mike Adams and Cliff Pennington and wish I would have taken baseball more seriously. This area has obviously been a great place for kids to learn and succeed in the game. I have 2 boys who are 10 and 6 years old, I have resorted to begging my 10 year old Aaron to play baseball, he has declined numerous times. So I have decided to just start playing catch with him and letting him hit the ball at the park and hope and pray that he begins to get interested. Baseball has always been one of my biggest loves in life although I will admit being an Astros fan helped stagger that love for a while. Watching High School games lately and TAMU-CC Islanders games have helped me find my love for the game again. I hope that one day my kids will be able to share my love for the game and appreciate what a pure and natural game it can be. I think playing baseball has helped shape my character, tought me about teamwork and respect. I hope something in this world is out there to teach my kids the same, guess it will have to be me. I guess thats the way things should be anyways.
